If our field is not dried out by the first event on the 27th, is there another place we can hold the event?

The first race of 2008 went fairly well. As in the past, there was a little more wind than we would have liked, but not as bad as some of the events have been.

4 of us made the race. It seems a few guys had not had time to get ready. Hopefully they will be out for the next session.

Duane showed us that his 'modified' kit had significant speed capabilities. Apparently the single aileron, large spinner, filling the mold gaps, and reduced canopy make a difference. Therefore, an asterisk is appropriate. Luckily in the first race, he cut multiple corners, so was DQ'd. He didn't get caught in the other races.

Bob tried 2 different planes, after having some problems with #1.

Brian got hammered (by me) in the last race, cutting his elevator, which resulted in some fixable damage. I swear he hit the brakes, just as I was passing him! Actually, I thought I was inside him, when I pulled up for the corner. Apparently I wasn't.

We had fun, and hope to continue having fun. Thanks to the guys who helped out!

Do we need to have two categories - stock and modified?

I'm almost tempted to just say screw it, and do just that!

Got any suggestions on how to pin it down?

I wish Brian had been running the iMh pack, so we could see the relative speed with more than just mine. Are you going to make the next one? Pat?

I'd planned on making this one, but forgot about an obligation I had...  I should be able to make the next.  Sounds like I'll definitely be chasing everyone else ;)

I don't mind an asterisk, although I would hate to give up the prize money.   :)  Stock vs modified class, interesting idea.  Although where was this thought previously, when most were running stock prop nut resulting in the nose being about a 4 inch air dam, and one had "cleaned up" airflow over the nose with a 3 inch spinner?  Most planes have some type of "mod", be it sanded dimples, filled in mold marks, filled in hinge lines, spinners, etc.  My experience seems to show the most important keys to good performance rest with the batteries and the ESC.  Once I deep cycled the batteries, and switched from orginal Chinese ESC to Castle, good motor performance followed.  Which brings me to the question, who would run in modified class?  Only those whose "improvements" are preceived to actually work for better performance?   ;D

Heck, I don't know... Maybe we need an 'open/unlimited' class?

I'm up for anything :D

Title: Rescheduled Race from July 27th to August 3rd
Post by: Gene Bond on July 22, 2008, 10:02:50 PM
I am going to reschedule the July 27nd race to August 3rd. I didn't realize the Brickyard 400 was early this year, when we scheduled it.

Hmmm... Baker has 666 posts... Coincidence?

edit Note: Changed title, Merged duplicate post, Changed Schedule and Calendar to reflect new date

Any ideas on how to increase participation?

'Open' rule w/ pitch speed limit?

Open it up to non-club members?

Just let it be, and enjoy the few of having a ball?

We finally got another race in on Sunday, August 3rd.

5 guys showed up, John flew his Mini Swift with us as a test.

In the end, Duane took the win, after Doug had some unexplained failure in the 3rd heat, and his plane expoded on impact with the turf. Doug had won the first 2 heats, no doubt thanks to some fine cut-judges  ;)

Even though I finished ahead of Duane in the 3rd heat, a cut-judge ruled me back to 3rd place :( Heck, it couldn't have been more than 50 or 75 feet!

In the main, a back marker cut the north pylon and was right in the way when when I was coming through. And come through, I did! John's Mini Swift was in more pieces than my Corsair  8)

Fun was had by all.

We just need to get attendance up, and it'd be even more fun. I'm wide open to suggestions to make this fun for all!

Anyone test the Swift II to see how they compare with the corsairs?

I've got a Swift II ready to go, except my motor hasn't arrived yet  :(

Got another race in, Sunday August 17th.

It seemed strange with almost no wind  ??? The new pylon markers / Flags that Bob Badger made were hanging limp most of the evening...

In the end, Duane and I tied, despite the fact he snuck by me each race he started. He just failed to start one race. I guess you do get forgetful as you get old... He put a dead battery in his plane  ;D

There were very few cuts reported, I was called for a critical cut, which took me from 1st/2nd down to 4th in the 2nd round  ::) But that's racing!

Eric flew a Swift// with us, and was competitive. With a few more sessions and familiarity with the wing, he'll be a force to deal with.

The suggestion was made to hold 'Time Trials' for new guys who want to try the course out, but who are not comfortable flying in the tight pack we sometimes seem to get. It's an interesting proposal, and I'd like to hear some feedback on it from other members:

The pilot would launch, and run a lap or so to get comfortable, then we'd start the clock. We'd clock 3 laps, and use this as the basis for scoring.

Again, I'd like to hear some feedback. We'll give it a try next race (September 28), so get your planes ready!

As always, a blast was had by all!

Definitely a lot of fun!   First race, a proctologist with an illegal airframe came through the rear of the rental swift II I was flying and broke the prop.  Many thanks to Duane as he must've felt guilty after my exam an he let my fly his swift for the next few races so I could get comfortable with the course. Despite Gene's complement, I'm not sure I was that competitive.  I was lapped at least 3 times during the last race.  I was taking the long way around to keep out of peoples way since I'm not comfortable in the tight pack and was still sore from the exam in the first heat.

I got my motors in today, so I'll be flying my swift during the next race.  I highly recommend anyone interested to give it a try.  I'm definitely not a great pilot, but I still had blast!  It brought back memories when I used to do carpet oval RC car racing with the slight difference that these planes are slow enough you can actually blink your eyes during the race...

Are we having another go at it this sunday?

Actually I need to reschedule it... With the Colts game at home, it screws up a couple of our schedules.

I'm going to reschedule for the following Sunday, 10/19 @ 5pm.

An e-mail should go out tonight.

Due to a home Colts game, let's move the 10/12 race to 10/19. Still @ 5pm.

Results from 9-28 race

Small group made it. Must have been a NASCAR race on or something?

Anyway, I did poorly, smashing my wing into the Pylon in the 1st round, and then dorking it nose into the ground after the finish of the 2nd round. I had cut a corner in the 2nd...

Matt dominated, with the only Corsair out there. Mine is still in pieces from the race at the ADA show.

We did not realize the trouble Eric was having, until after racing, and then gave him some help to get his wing dialed in. He'll be a force to recon with next race.
