Title: Mint Julep Scale Meet, Rough River State Park, KY - Thu 5/15 thru Sun 5/18
Post by: Chuck Baker on February 20, 2008, 12:02:22 AM
Radio controlled model airplanes are built to scale and are judged on detail and precision. Planes are split up in to divisions that include Best Civilian, Best Military, Fun Scale Sportsman, Fun Scale Aerobatics, and more. See the action at the Rough River Dam airport.

Here are directions to the Rough River State Park airport from Indianapolis:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=indianapolis,+IN&daddr=Rough+River+state+park,+KY+40119&sll=38.58843,-86.094265&sspn=2.687834,4.257202&ie=UTF8&ll=38.681222,-86.121826&spn=2.684299,4.257202&z=8&om=1 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=indianapolis,+IN&daddr=Rough+River+state+park,+KY+40119&sll=38.58843,-86.094265&sspn=2.687834,4.257202&ie=UTF8&ll=38.681222,-86.121826&spn=2.684299,4.257202&z=8&om=1)

According to Google maps, it's about 186 miles if you go through Corydon, IN and down through the country.  You can also go down through Louisville and Elizabethtown.  It's a bit further, but time is about the same since more of it is interstate.

Saturday is the best day to spectate.  They start flying about 9am in the morning and continue 'til about 4pm normally.  Around noon, they set all the aircraft out on the runway for spectators to take photos.

Anybody need a room for the Mint Julep this year?

I've got a room at the lodge, and I'm not going to be able to make it this year...

Let me know - Chuck

Well, I ended up going, but stayed at the Pine Tree...
Mike Bealmear was kind enough to let me ride down with him this year.

The first round went pretty well, but the 2nd and subsequent rounds were VERY windy.
I busted one of the retracts in my Corsair on the 2nd flight and was done for the weekend.
I believe that's the first time I've ever scratched a round at the Julep.

Gary Wild and Tucker also had gear issues.
John Dunn didn't even get to fly - busted his plane in practice.

On a positive note, Mike Bealmear got a very good score on Sunday morning!

Maybe next year will be better...

Chuck

I'll be back next year. I ask Barb to order a new wing and cowell this morning. Maybe I just need to take 2 or more planes next year. Another year's practice  won't hurt but I would NOT fly in THAT much wind!!!

Received the following from Mike Bealmear:
-----------------------------------------

At the Mint Julep Scale Meet Saturday, Dale Locander decided to have his 1/3 scale DVII closely inspect the tops of a couple of trees. These were over past the road for those of you familiar with the flying set up there.

He actually hit the tops of two perhaps three trees (it was very windy), shattered the prop in the process, was still able to get it back over the road, under the power lines (or maybe through, over, on, were not sure) and on the ground with minimal damage. As you can see, Dale brought back some of the trees too!

A new Mint Julep Legend is born!

Another photographer has pictures of it actually going through the tree tops, and is supposed to post them on RCU at some point.

Cheers,
Mike Bealmear
